Open position for a PhD student for 3 years at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany (earliest start: November 2016) in the project on “Formation and properties of inorganic silica-contaminant compounds in soil (funding by DFG - German Research Foundation). Salary will be according to the German public-service tariff TV-L 13 (65%).
The aim of the project is to clarify the processes of immobilization of Pb, Cd and Cu in soil by means of interactions with silica. You will investigate the bonding mechanisms between silica and the metals and the role of dissolved organic and inorganic substances, and surfaces, naturally occurring in soil. You will carry out a series of precipitation experiments and apply analytical techniques such as NMR, UV/Vis and IR spectroscopy, ICP-OES and particle analysis for characterization of precipitated particles. The formation and mobility of silica-contaminant compounds in soil will be studied by soil-column experiments.
Requirements: Above-average level MSc or Diploma in soil science, geochemistry, environmental science, or chemistry. Experience with the aforementioned analytical techniques and knowledge of the German language are helpful, but not required.
The project will be carried out at the University of Hohenheim, Department of Soil Chemistry and Pedology (group of Prof. Dr. Thilo Rennert).
Please send your application to Dr. Anna Georgiadis (email@example.com) before 30th September 2016.
